JMC Activities

 Specifically, JMC is engaged in the following activities in which the respective committees comprising member companies play a central role.

1. International Trade and Investment
The relevant committee keeps track of negotiations for EPAs, investment agreements, etc., for plurilateral negotiation in the WTO, talks on trade liberalization in APEC, international trade and investment issues of countries around the world; examines response measures that the machinery industry should take; and expresses its opinions and makes proposals if needed. The committee collects and provides information on a daily basis about trends in areas such as international trade and investment regulations and customs information around the world. It also holds seminars on topics such as the use of EPAs and Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), and competition laws.

2. International Tax Affairs
The committee in charge examines and develops responses to legislation and implementation by authorities in Japan and abroad of measures proposed by OECD/G20 on base erosion and profit shifting (BEPS), and the committee also examines international tax issues related to the repatriation of foreign earnings, problems involving tax systems, and taxation related to transfer price, permanent establishments (PE) in emerging countries, etc. The committee also expresses opinions and makes proposals on international taxation related issues, and makes requests to the Japanese government for the conclusion and amendment of tax treaties with foreign countries.

3. Foreign Intellectual Property Systems
The relevant committee collects information and conducts surveys on legal systems regulating intellectual property and how they have been operating in China, intellectual property systems in major ASEAN countries, trends in intellectual property systems in India, trends in amendments of intellectual property-related laws and judicial precedents in the U.S. and the EU, and other matters. The committee also expresses the industry’s opinions and compiles reports where appropriate, and provides intellectual property information from China, the U.S., and elsewhere as needed.

4. Overseas Markets
The relevant committee collects information and conducts sur veys on politics and economics, international trade and investment environments, machiner y demand, trends in infrastructure development, and other matters, in growing markets such as China, India and Indonesia, and examines how to address them.

5. International Competitiveness and Facilitation of International Trade
The relevant committee: (1) examines the current status of international competitiveness of machinery industries in Japan, the U.S., Europe and Asia, strategies and corporate structures to survive global competition, and Internet of Things (IoT) strategies, and proposes measures to enhance international competitiveness; and (2) in order to facilitate international trade, examines ideal trade procedures and responses to amendments of international trade laws (transportation and export /import laws).

6. Overseas Environmental Measures
The relevant committee collects and analyzes information about developments in hazardous chemical substances restriction, chemicals management, waste management and recycling requirements, energy and resources efficiency, measures against global warming, and other environment-related measures in countries around the world, shares such information with member companies, and examines how to address those matters.

7. Overseas Standards and Conformity, and Product Liability (PL)
Activities regarding overseas standards and conformity: The relevant committee collects and analyzes information about trends in the EU’s CE Marking Directives, product safety standards and conformity assessment systems of countries around the world, and standards and conformity assessment systems, etc., of international organizations, shares such information with member companies, and examines how to respond to those trends.

Activities regarding PL: The relevant committee collects and analyzes information about systems such as PL-related systems, accident report and recall systems, and litigation systems, in major foreign countries and regions such as the U.S., the EU and China, shares such information with member companies, and examines how to deal with those systems.

8. Promotion of Plant and Infrastructure Exports
The relevant committee collects information about world infrastructure demand, major foreign countries’ initiatives to promote infrastructure exports, and other such data, examines what infrastructure export policy and support systems Japan should introduce to boost plant and infrastructure exports, and expresses its opinions and makes proposals to the government and other relevant parties as necessary. 9. Trade Insurance Systems
The relevant committee discusses Japan’s international trade insurance system and management of the system, various systems of Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI) and its management of the systems, and expresses its opinions and makes proposals to government authorities and NEXI so that they will improve those systems and their management methods. In addition, JMC applies for comprehensive trade insurance for member companies and provides preliminary and procedure consultation. It also holds briefing sessions on comprehensive insurance systems and international trade insurance systems as a whole and seminars on measures against international trade risks, and implements comprehensive anti-risk measures.

10.Export Control and Security
The relevant committee: (1) keeps track of regulatory developments under Japan’s export control laws, examines response measures and expresses its opinions and makes proposals to the government and other relevant parties as needed, and publishes books and guidance necessary for Japanese companies to comply with export control laws and holds update seminars on the export control laws; (2) observes policy developments on supply chain security in Japan and international organizations, examines logistics security measures implemented in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, and expresses its opinions and makes proposals as needed; and (3) provides security information to support the overseas security of member companies, holds workshops for risk managers, and helps to establish risk management and other systems.

11.Basic Services to Support Overseas Activities of Members
(1) As part of its efforts to provide general information, JMC issues the JMC Journal, posts information on its website, and delivers information via email, among other means. (2) As initiatives designed to develop human resources, JMC offers trading business courses for beginners and holds workshops on logistics processes at Narita and Kansai International Airports, the ports of Tokyo and Kobe, and other locations.
